Agdz Morocco: The Oasis Town at the Head of the Draa Valley
Agdz Morocco opens the Draa Valley: the first palm oasis, Tamnougalt kasbah, Jbel Kissane views, and how to add the stop to a private route south.
On the south side of Agdz Morocco, the date palms start where the last houses stop. There is no gate and no car park; the oasis opens straight off the road. The town sits at about 942 metres on the Draa river, at the foot of Jbel Kissane and roughly 65 km south of Ouarzazate. Agdz is the first palm oasis of the Draa Valley and the natural place to slow down between Ouarzazate and Zagora.
In this guide, we will break down the palm oasis, the ksar of Tamnougalt and the viewpoint above town. We will also cover drive times from Ouarzazate and Zagora, and how the stop fits a private route south.
Agdz: The Oasis Town at the Head of the Draa Valley
The Agdz Draa Valley begins here. The Upper Draa runs for about 200 km and holds six oasis stretches in a row: Mezguita, Tinzouline, Ternata, Fezouata, Ktaoua and M’Hamid. Mezguita is the one that opens at Agdz, which is why the palms reach the edge of town. In Tamazight the name means resting place. The Draa Valley driving guide follows the whole 200 km, from Ouarzazate down to M’Hamid.
By road, Agdz is about 65 km south of Ouarzazate, roughly 1.5 hours over the Tizi n’Tinififft, and about 92 km north of Zagora, another 1.5 hours. Our Zagora desert gateway guide picks up the corridor where the sand begins.
All the green comes from the river and the channels that pull from it. Time your visit around a few things:
- Seguias: the irrigation channels that carry river water into date, henna and fig plots.
- The Thursday souk: the weekly market held outside town toward Zagora, with produce, spices, textiles and livestock.
- Date cooperatives: small palm-grove workshops where growers dry and sell the valley’s dates.
The plots sit behind low walls, so keep to the paths and ask before you walk into a garden.
Tamnougalt: Kasbah, Mellah and the Caids of Mezguita
The Tamnougalt kasbah stands about 6 km from Agdz, across the Draa and up the far bank. The ksar is usually dated to the 16th century and was the seat of the caids of Mezguita, the family that governed this stretch of the valley. It resembles the Glaoui kasbahs further west, though the caids of Mezguita held it.

Four gates open into lanes so narrow that some stretches are roofed over. People still live in part of the ksar, next to houses that have fallen in, and the mixture is what keeps the place inhabited. Cars park by the gate and children cross the lanes, so the visit runs at village pace.
A village guide usually walks you through:
- The four gates: the old entrances that mark out the ksar’s shape.
- The covered lanes: shaded passages running between earthen walls and low doorways.
- The mellah: the Jewish quarter, whose families left in the mid-20th century.
- The caids’ kasbah: the stronghold on the neighbouring outcrop, partly restored, with farm tools on display.
The kasbah charges a small admission fee, and village guides are the norm here. Allow about an hour and bring cash.
The View from Tizi n’Tinififft and the Ridge of Jbel Kissane
Most things to do in Agdz happen on foot. The widest view comes from the road. North of town the N9 crosses the Tizi n’Tinififft at about 1,660 m, and the palm corridor opens below you on the descent. Some sources give the pass as 1,693 m, which tells you how loosely these figures are surveyed.

Jbel Kissane rises to 1,485 m east of town, a bare ridge about 14 km long and less than 2 km wide. The name comes from the tea glasses its skyline is said to look like. The rock shifts from pink to violet as the light moves.
Walks that need no planning:
- Oasis circuits: flat paths from town through the palms and along the seguias.
- Lower slopes: short climbs on the foot of the ridge, looking down the valley.
- The last hour of light: when Kissane and the palms both turn colour.
None of the walks is long, so take water and go early or late, when the valley is at its coolest.
How Agdz Fits Your Route South
A half day covers the oasis, Tamnougalt and one viewpoint. A night adds the Thursday souk and a slower walk through the grove. Agdz is a working market town: there are no dunes, the guesthouse list is short, and several kasbahs are partly ruined.
The R108 does not split at Agdz. That junction is Tansikht, about 40 km south, where the road to Nkob and Tazzarine leaves the N9. Our Draa Valley kasbah town guide covers what waits on that branch.
Spring and autumn are the comfortable windows. January days average around 17°C with nights near 3 to 4°C, July days run around 39°C, and the valley sees about 110 mm of rain a year. Book ahead in those seasons, when the guesthouses fill.
With a private driver, the stop adds no extra transfer: it sits on the road you are already driving, so an hour in Tamnougalt does not eat into the day. Two of our journeys cross the valley. The 9-Day Morocco Tour from Marrakesh passes through on Day 6, between Alnif and Ouarzazate, and the 10-Day Morocco Tour from Marrakech crosses the Draa on Day 6.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Agdz worth a stop between Ouarzazate and Zagora?
Yes, if you want the oasis as much as the landmarks. Agdz gives you the first palm grove of the Draa, the ksar and mellah of Tamnougalt about 6 km away, and a mountain pass viewpoint on the way in. A half day covers it; a night lets you catch the Thursday souk.
What are the things to do in Agdz?
Walk the palm oasis and its irrigation channels, visit the Tamnougalt kasbah and mellah, watch the light change on Jbel Kissane, and stop at the Tizi n'Tinififft viewpoint on the descent into town. The Thursday souk is the other reason to time a visit.
How far is Agdz from Ouarzazate and Zagora?
Agdz is about 65 km south of Ouarzazate, roughly 1.5 hours over the Tizi n'Tinififft pass, and about 92 km north of Zagora, another 1.5 hours. From Marrakech allow 5.5 to 6 hours via the Tizi n'Tichka.
Can you visit Tamnougalt kasbah from Agdz, and how long does it take?
Yes. Tamnougalt is about 6 km from Agdz, across the Draa. A village guide usually walks you through the four gates, the covered lanes and the mellah, and the caids' kasbah charges a small admission. Allow about an hour.
