Rendition Filming Locations: Marrakech and Essaouira
Rendition filming locations: Marrakech played the unnamed capital, Essaouira shot one coastal scene. Here is what you can still walk.
Rendition opens in a capital the film refuses to name, and the streets under that opening are real. Rendition filming locations are Marrakech, which played the unnamed city, and Essaouira, where a small unit went to the coast for a single scene. The answer to where was Rendition filmed is those two Moroccan cities, with California and South Africa covering the rest.
This guide covers both cities, the one set you can still walk through, and a two-day route between them.
Where Was Rendition Filmed? Marrakech, Essaouira and a Country With No Name
Two Moroccan cities carried the work. Marrakech was the main base, with the medina and the city square standing in for the old quarter of an unnamed capital. Then the unit drove west for one coastal scene.
Most results for Rendition 2007 Morocco hand you a city name and stop. The useful detail sits in contemporary Moroccan press. The detention set was dressed inside the ruined Palais El Badi, with hundreds of local extras in orange. After about five weeks in Marrakech the unit moved to Essaouira for a scene, then finished the shoot in South Africa.
On screen the country is never named, and that was deliberate. Kelley Sane’s script was set in Egypt, and the film was going to shoot there. The cast could not be insured to travel, so the production moved to Morocco. Gavin Hood settled on “North Africa” so no single state took the blame.
Marrakech Filming Locations - Jemaa el-Fnaa and the Medina
The city’s Marrakech filming locations are about texture more than marked spots. Crews recreated “the alleys of Cairo” here, which shows how the medina was used: a backdrop for a capital with no name. Walk the souks and the kasbah lanes and you are moving through the same material the camera did.

Jemaa el-Fnaa needs no film framing. It is the city’s great square, loud from late afternoon, with its own screen history. The opening bombing is the scene everyone wants pinned to a corner of it. No source names that corner, so treat any precise claim as invention.
What the production borrowed from these streets:
- The kasbah approach: Bab Agnaou, the Almohad gate, opens into the quarter, with El Badi a short walk inside.
- The dyers’ lanes: wool drying in ochre and orange overhead, close to the colour of the extras’ jumpsuits.
- The lanes dressed as Cairo: the alleys the crew recreated as old Cairo, narrow enough to lose the sky.
- The square late in the day: drums and story-tellers, the crowd texture the film borrowed without pinning a scene.
The festival, the working screens and the old picture houses belong to a different day, which our one-day Marrakech cinema itinerary covers.
Palais El Badi - The Detention Set You Can Walk Into
El Badi is the one confirmed set you can walk into. The Saadian palace, begun by Sultan Ahmad al-Mansur in the late sixteenth century, was already a ruin when the crew arrived. A ruin suited a detention site. Moroccan press reported the courtyard filled with local extras in orange jumpsuits.
What survives is the palace, nothing else. There is no cell to find and no interrogation room to photograph. Stand in the sunken courtyard and you feel the size of it.
What to look at inside:
- The sunken courtyard: vast, open to the sky, and the reason the place reads as a prison.
- The ramparts: storks nest on top, and the view crosses the kasbah rooftops.
- The pisé walls: pink earth and leftover zellige, worn back to the bone.
Visiting is simple. Entry runs about 100 MAD for foreign adults, roughly 09:00 to 17:00 with last entry near 16:30. Go at opening or late afternoon, because the courtyard holds heat.
Essaouira Film Locations - Wind, Ramparts and One Scene
After about five weeks in Marrakech, the unit moved to Essaouira for a scene. Location databases describe a harbour scene, and the working port fits the plot: a man put on a boat and made to disappear. No primary source pins down the spot, so the harbour stays a description.

The rest of Essaouira film locations runs on atmosphere. The eighteenth-century ramparts, Skala de la Ville and Skala du Port, take the Atlantic head-on. The fishing port still lands sardines most mornings, and Mogador island sits offshore in the haze. The medina is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and Orson Welles shot Othello here decades before this film arrived.
The wind is what you remember. It bends the gulls and sandblasts the beach, and there is no shelter on the ramparts. Bring a windproof layer and walk them in the middle hours, when the light comes off the water.
Two Days, Two Cities - Driving the Film’s Route
Marrakech to Essaouira is about 175 to 190 km, or 2.5 to 3 hours by road. Two days covers the route without rushing either city. Road notes and stops on the way sit in our Marrakech to Essaouira travel guide.
The shape that works:
- Day one, Marrakech: El Badi at opening, medina lanes after, Jemaa el-Fnaa at dusk.
- Day two, Essaouira: out by eight, ramparts and port by eleven, lunch in the medina.
- Overnight option: sleep on the coast and drive back the next morning, with no fixed hour.
A private car and driver removes the timetable problem: you stop where the light is good, and nobody counts minutes.
If the coast leaves you a free afternoon, our guide to things to do in Essaouira fills it.
Both cities sit inside our 8-Day Morocco Tour: Marrakech, Sahara Desert & Essaouira, which puts the film streets next to the dunes. The 9 Days Morocco Tour from Marrakesh adds the coast at a slower pace.

Frequently Asked Questions
Was Rendition filmed in Morocco?
Yes. Marrakech was the main Moroccan city, and one scene was shot in Essaouira after about five weeks of work there. The Chicago and Washington material was filmed in California and Washington DC, and the South African scenes were shot around Cape Town. Jake Gyllenhaal's scenes are the ones filmed in Morocco.
Where in Marrakech was Rendition filmed?
The medina and the city square stood in for an unnamed North African capital, and the detention set was dressed inside the ruined Palais El Badi, which is open to visitors. No source names which corner of Jemaa el-Fnaa was used for the opening bombing, so there is no marked spot to find.
Can you visit the Rendition filming locations?
Yes, and both are walkable. El Badi and the medina are on foot in Marrakech, and the port and ramparts are on foot in Essaouira, which is 2.5 to 3 hours from Marrakech by road. Nothing of the set survives, so what you visit is the place itself, not a prop.
Why is the country in Rendition never named?
The script was set in Egypt and the production could not insure a shoot there, so it moved to Morocco. The director chose 'North Africa' so that no single country would be identified, which is also why Marrakech reads as a generic capital on screen.
