Live from Baghdad Filming Locations: Casablanca and LA

Live from Baghdad was filmed in Casablanca and Los Angeles, not Baghdad. What the record confirms about the HBO shoot, and what it never did.

Live from Baghdad starts at a CNN desk in Atlanta, where the decision is made to send a crew into Iraq. The 2002 HBO television film then follows two producers through the 1991 bombing campaign, with much of the war reported from a hotel room. Its live from baghdad filming locations split between Morocco and California, and the Moroccan half came down to one city. Mick Jackson directed, with Michael Keaton as Robert Wiener and Helena Bonham Carter as Ingrid Formanek.

Where was Live from Baghdad filmed? Live from Baghdad was filmed in Casablanca, which stood in for Baghdad, and in Los Angeles, where the hotel interiors were built as sets. In this guide, we will break down what the shoot record confirms, which claims do not survive a check, and what you can still walk in Casablanca.

What the Record Confirms

Trade coverage from release carries a bare production note: filmed in Morocco and Los Angeles. The contemporary reviews went further. The New York Times named Casablanca as the stand-in for Baghdad, and the Los Angeles Times and other reviews published the same month put the city beside California.

Three independent reviews make the city safe to state. They do not name a district, a hotel or a square, and no permit record or crew interview surfaced while researching this piece. Most pages about the film fill that gap with guesses.

Jackson’s commentary on the DVD walks through the shoot the same way. It separates the Culver City sets from the Morocco location work, and describes the airstrike night as real 1991 news footage cut with new material.

  • Documented: Casablanca for Baghdad, Los Angeles for studio interiors and desert exteriors.
  • Single source: a wire report on Saddam Hussein portraits hung on Casablanca walls.
  • Unverified: every street address, and any claim borrowed from later Baghdad shoots.

Casablanca and the Morocco Shoot

The Moroccan block wrapped in spring 2002. Casablanca supplied the exteriors, and the city had the right bones for it: wide boulevards, continuous stone facades, colonnades, shutters and flat roofs from the French protectorate years. Put portraits on a wall and a boulevard starts to read as 1991 Baghdad.

For anyone checking Live from Baghdad Morocco, the useful detail is the scale: whole streets, no single famous building. The most specific published account came from a wire report at release, which described large Saddam Hussein portraits hung on walls in Casablanca and desert near Ouarzazate standing in for the ground around Kuwait City. Both details rest on that one source.

Live from Baghdad Casablanca work also sits inside a three-way split. The location record lists Culver Studios in Culver City as the studio base, and Eagle Mountain near Desert Center for the California desert exteriors. The streets are Moroccan. The hotel rooms were built on a stage.

The Claims That Do Not Hold Up

The commonest error borrows another film’s map. Rabat, Salé and Kenitra appear in lists about this shoot, and those three cities belong to the 2010 Baghdad production we cover in our guide to Green Zone filming locations. No source places the 2002 unit in any of them.

A second cluster attaches famous buildings to the shoot. Nothing puts the Hassan II Mosque in the film, and the mosque was finished after the events on screen. Naming the Atlas Studios at Ouarzazate stretches the wire report, which only says desert near the town. Both claims come from lists that copy each other.

Awards get inflated the same way. A widely copied summary credits eight Emmys, including the television movie prize. The record shows ten nominations and three wins, for casting, single-camera picture editing and sound mixing.

What You Can Still Walk Today in Casablanca

Casablanca answers a Baghdad search with architecture, and there are no addresses to collect. The protectorate authorities laid the centre out to impress, and that is the texture a film crew needs when the real city is out of reach. Nothing on the ground marks a scene today.

Evening market street in Casablanca's old medina

The centre is compact enough for one loop:

  • Morning: Place Mohammed V, then Boulevard Mohammed V past the Rialto cinema.
  • Midday: the Central Market, then the old medina down by the port.
  • Afternoon: the Habous quarter for arcades and craft workshops.
  • Evening: the Corniche at Ain Diab, with the Atlantic alongside.

The Hassan II Mosque is the one stop that needs no film connection. It is among the few Moroccan mosques non-Muslims may enter, on guided tours at fixed times, outside prayer hours, with shoulders and knees covered. Our 48 hours in Casablanca itinerary fits the walk into a fuller weekend.

Planning a Film-Location Stop

A film-location afternoon works best inside a longer route. Casablanca is the arrival city for most Morocco itineraries, so the walk costs you half a day before the imperial cities or the south. A driver-guide is worth it here, because the boulevards mean more when someone explains what the protectorate built and why a film crew wanted it.

Go early if you want the light on the stone facades, and keep the medina for the middle of the day, when the arcades give shade.

Our 8 Days Tour from Casablanca to Marrakech starts in the city and continues through the imperial cities to the Sahara. For more time, the 14-Day Morocco Tour from Casablanca adds the south and the desert legs.
