Essaouira has a nickname the town uses without irony: the Wind City of Africa. Water sports in Essaouira are wind-led, and that shapes a day here. Kitesurfers, wingfoilers and windsurfers wait for the afternoon thermal from spring to autumn, while paddleboarders, kayakers and boat crews take the calm morning window.

The wind here runs on a clock you can plan around. Each board suits a different beach and level, and lessons follow a format with clear limits. Those three things decide how much time you spend riding rather than waiting.

The Wind Machine: Reading Essaouira’s Daily Rhythm

Essaouira faces open Atlantic with only the low Mogador islands for shelter, so the trade wind arrives unobstructed. Locals count 300-plus wind days a year.

Season windows:

  • March to October: the reliable band, 12 to 18 knots early, 18 to 25 before noon.
  • June to August: peak, with 25 to 35 knots on July and August afternoons.
  • Spring and autumn: 14 to 23 knots, cleaner water, fewer kites.
  • December to March: storm-driven and unpredictable, so check a forecast first.

Water stays glassy from 09:00 to 11:00, the thermal peaks between 13:00 and 17:00, then eases into a second window. A 3/2 mm suit covers most of the year; a 4/3 mm with booties belongs in the bag from December to March, when the sea drops to 16 °C. Late summer reaches 21 to 23 °C. Winter works differently. The big Atlantic swell returns for the reef and point breaks, while the wind becomes a forecast question rather than a guarantee. The season you pick depends on the sport you want.

Kitesurfing and Wingfoiling: Two Ways to Ride the Alizé at Diabat

Essaouira kitesurfing works because the bay forgives. Sand bottom, side-shore wind that pushes you back toward the beach, and low shelter behind Mogador soften the learning curve. Most schools teach at Diabat, under fifteen minutes south of town.

A beginner course runs three days. IKO-certified instructors cap semi-private lessons at two students each, groups up to four, with kite, board, wetsuit and helmet included. Nine hours brings most people to their first controlled rides, and schools teach in English, Spanish, Italian and French.

Independent upwind riding is the real milestone after the nine-hour block, and it takes longer than brochures imply. Instructors are straight with beginners about conditions and will say when the wind is above your level. Wingfoiling draws a different temperament: no lines, a quick curve to first flight if you already have board balance. It wants moderate wind, so a 25 to 35 knot July afternoon is wasted on a beginner wing.

Windsurfing at Moulay Bouzerktoun: The Sport That Built the Reputation

Essaouira windsurfing is where the coast earned its reputation, and it still has the deepest local roots of the three wind sports. The inside water in the bay stays flat, so a first-timer can uphaul and tack without getting punished. Rental and coaching are easy to arrange.

The advanced stage sits at Moulay Bouzerktoun, about 25 km north, or 35 to 40 minutes by road. It has a rocky launch, a right-hand wave and a tight entry, and it is the spot that made the area famous. Advanced riders rig a small sail for it, and beginners are better off in the bay.

Watch the launch before you commit, and do not assume the bay’s forgiving sand carries over.

Calm-Water Days: SUP, Kayak and Boat Trips Around Mogador

Between 09:00 and 11:00 the bay goes glassy, and paddleboards and kayaks come off the roof racks. Guided island rides run two to three hours, and harbour boats do a loop of one to one and a half hours.

Morning water is the cleanest of the day, and a paddle before 11:00 leaves the afternoon free for a lesson. The Îles Purpuraires are a protected breeding reserve for Eleonora’s falcon, so landing on Mogador Island is prohibited. A trip that circles the islands gives you falcons overhead and the ramparts seen from the water. One that advertises a shore landing is selling access the rules do not allow, so read the offer before you pay.

Which Spot, Which Board - and What to Do When It Blows Too Hard

Pick the spot before the board. A wrong beach ruins a good wind day.

  • Essaouira bay: sand, side-shore, all levels, gustier at the northern end near the ramparts.
  • Diabat: under 15 minutes south, quieter water, the standard lesson venue.
  • Sidi Kaouki: 25 km south, about 30 minutes, shorebreak and currents, intermediate and up.
  • Moulay Bouzerktoun: 25 km north, 35 to 40 minutes, rocky launch, advanced only.
  • Cap Sim: reef, awkward access, expert only.

When it blows too hard you have four moves: ride before 11:00 or after 17:00, stay at the southern end of the bay, drop a kite size instead of cancelling, or take a land day. The medina, port and rampart walk cost nothing, so the land half of things to do in Essaouira works when it blows.

For waves, our Essaouira surf guide covers the wave-first version of this coast.

Both Atlantic itineraries build in a free Essaouira day for the water. The 8-Day Morocco Tour: Marrakech, Sahara Desert & Essaouira Adventure ends on the coast, and the 9 Days Morocco Tour from Marrakesh adds two Essaouira nights.

Frequently Asked Questions

What water sports can you do in Essaouira?

Kitesurfing and wingfoiling are the biggest draw, with windsurfing close behind, all powered by the afternoon trade wind. Calm mornings are for paddleboarding, kayaking or a boat trip around the Mogador islands, and surfers get the glassy early window.

When is the best time for water sports in Essaouira?

The wind is reliable from March to October and strongest in June, July and August, when afternoons often hit 25 to 35 knots. Spring and autumn bring 14 to 23 knots with cleaner water and fewer people.

Can beginners try kitesurfing in Essaouira?

Yes. The bay has a sand bottom and side-shore wind that pushes you toward the beach, and most schools teach at Diabat just south of town. Semi-private lessons cap at two students per instructor, and nine hours is the usual path to first controlled rides.

What happens if the wind is too strong?

Ride before 11:00 or after 17:00, move to the calmer southern end of the bay, or switch to a paddle or a surf session. Schools reschedule blown-out lessons rather than teach above your level, and the medina, port and ramparts make a windy afternoon worthwhile on land.
