Dades Gorge vs Todra Gorge: Which One Should You Pick

Dades Gorge vs Todra Gorge decided by hours, walking and light: what each canyon costs on the Merzouga run and which one fits your day.

Two canyons cut the same stretch of southern Morocco, roughly an hour apart on the N10, and most drivers have room for only one of them. Dades Gorge vs Todra Gorge is a question of hours. One is a 600 m slot you walk into on flat ground; the other is a 25 to 30 km climb you drive in second gear. Pick wrong and you lose either a walking hour or a driving one.

Below is what each canyon asks in distance, effort and light, plus where the two fit on a Merzouga run. The short answer first: with one afternoon, pick Todra; with half a day and a car, pick Dades.

Dades Gorge vs Todra Gorge: The Call in One Minute

Both access roads leave the same highway. Boumalne Dades and Tinghir sit 55 km apart on the N10, about 45 to 60 minutes, so neither detour is harder to reach than the other.

Dades runs 50 to 60 km round trip from Boumalne to the bends and back. Todra runs about 30 km from Tinghir, most of it through palm gardens. Add the walk at Todra and the two visits take similar time, though one is spent on foot and one behind the wheel.

Both gorges can be visited late in the day, for different reasons. A late arrival at Tinghir still leaves room for the narrows before dusk, because the walk is flat and short. A late arrival at Boumalne hands you the bends in low side light, which is the hour they look best.

The one-minute rule:

  • One free afternoon and no walking: Todra, park at the mouth and walk in.
  • Half a day, a car, an interest in roads: Dades, up to the viewpoint and back.
  • A night in the valley: both, Dades in the evening and Todra the next morning.

Todra Gorge, Morocco: 600 Metres Between 300-Metre Walls

Todra Gorge, Morocco is the simpler of the two to visit. The R703 leaves Tinghir and runs 13 to 15 km north through the palm oasis in 20 to 25 minutes, two lanes most of the way with an easy gradient. Some maps and road signs write the name Todgha.

Park at either end of the narrows and walk 5 to 10 minutes on flat gravel beside the river. The visited section runs about 600 m, the walls reach roughly 300 m, and the gap closes to about 10 m at its tightest. Fifteen to 45 minutes covers the classic round trip. Drivers can also continue through the slot on tarmac to Tamtattouchte, about 40 km north, though most visits end at the narrows.

Entry is free, the road through the slot is paved, and managed parking costs around 10 to 20 MAD. Stopping inside the narrows is not permitted, so the pattern is park, walk, return. Mid to late morning gives the best light, coaches fill the middle of the day, and the canyon floor stays cool even in heat.

Dades Gorge, Morocco: The Road Is the Attraction

Dades Gorge, Morocco is seen from the driver’s seat. The R704 leaves Boumalne and reaches the Monkey Fingers at Tamellalt after 15 to 18 km, eroded pillars that cost nothing and take fifteen minutes to photograph. Our gateway town guide covers Boumalne itself if you plan to sleep there.

Past the narrows near Ait Oudinar the road climbs into the Tissadrine bends at 25 to 30 km. There the cliffs run 200 to 500 m and some corners fit a single vehicle. A cafe terrace at the top looks back down four or five stacked layers of road, with the valley floor far below.

Nothing on this route needs walking, and the run to the viewpoint and back fits 45 to 60 minutes with stops. Time it for late afternoon, when the side light turns the rock orange and the bends throw shadows across the asphalt. Coaches need several goes at the tighter corners, which is one reason the viewpoint car park fills late.

Which Gorge to Visit in Morocco With One Afternoon

Which gorge to visit in Morocco with a few spare hours depends on the car and the passengers. Todra needs no driving skill beyond the approach, and nobody in the car has to cope with heights. Dades rewards a driver who enjoys a road, and it is hard on anyone nervous about blind corners with a drop on the outside.

Neither headline sight charges admission and neither needs a 4x4. Both have parking at the main viewpoints, and both are busiest between mid-morning and mid-afternoon.

Match the gorge to the day:

  • Tight schedule, or travelling with grandparents: Todra, flat walking and a short drive.
  • Heights and hairpins a problem: Todra again, since the Dades bends are narrow.
  • The photograph of the road itself: Dades, above all from the cafe terrace.
  • Quiet, green and a valley to drive: Dades, whose road runs 62 km to Msemrir.

West of here, our guide to the Draa valley covers the palm road toward Zagora, which is the other half of this corridor.

Doing Both on the Merzouga Run

Both fit a single itinerary, which is the answer for anyone still unsure which gorge to visit in Morocco: the N10 links the gateway towns in 45 to 60 minutes. The upper plateau track joining the valleys is 4x4 only and no shortcut, so plan on the highway.

Order of play:

  • Late afternoon: the Tissadrine bends above Boumalne, sun behind you.
  • Night: Boumalne for the valley hotels, or Tinghir for an earlier start.
  • Next morning: the Todra narrows before the coaches, then east to the dunes.

Our 4-Day Marrakech to Fes Tour via Dades & Merzouga crosses both gorges and ends in Fes, so no road repeats. The 4-Day Morocco Desert Tour from Marrakech takes the same canyons and loops back to Marrakech.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Dades Gorge or Todra Gorge better?

It depends on the hours you have. Todra gives more drama per minute and asks for a flat walk of 15 to 45 minutes from the road. Dades is a 25 to 30 km drive up to the Tissadrine bends, and it suits anyone holding half a day and a car.

Can you drive through Todra Gorge?

Yes. The R703 is paved through the narrows and continues to Tamtattouchte, about 40 km and just over an hour from Tinghir. Stopping inside the slot is not allowed, so the pattern is park at one end, walk the 600 m, then drive on.

How far apart are Dades Gorge and Todra Gorge?

Boumalne Dades and Tinghir sit 55 km apart on the N10, roughly 45 to 60 minutes. From Boumalne the Tissadrine bends are another 25 to 30 km north; from Tinghir the Todra narrows are 13 to 15 km north.

Do you need a 4x4 for either gorge?

No. Both gorge roads are paved and an ordinary car reaches the main viewpoints. The plateau track that links the two upper valleys is 4x4 only, and it does not work as a shortcut between them.
