Museums in Tangier: A Walkable Trail Through the Medina
Museums in Tangier on foot: the Kasbah pair, the Legation's Bowles wing, Lorin's free archive - plus Tuesday closures and what to skip.
Tangier keeps about half a dozen museums worth your time. Four of them sit within a fifteen-minute walk of each other between the Grand Socco, the medina and the Kasbah. Most close on Tuesday, and one ticket covers the two kasbah buildings. At least two collections printed in older guidebooks no longer open their doors. The museums in Tangier are small, cheap and close together, and one walk covers the ones that matter.
In this guide, we will break down the order we send guests through those doors and how you can visit them on foot. We will also name the two collections you should stop looking for.
The Kasbah Cluster: Three Doors, One Square
The core of any route through the museums in Tangier starts at Place de la Kasbah, where three separate doors open onto the same square. The centre door belongs to the Museum of Mediterranean Cultures, built inside Dar el Makhzen, a palace begun in the early eighteenth century and open as a museum since 1922. A long renovation finished in 2016 gave it the name it carries now.
Ticket logic for Kasbah Museum Tangier: a few dozen dirhams, paid in cash at the door, with one ticket covering both kasbah buildings. Hours run roughly 10:00 to 18:00, and both buildings close on Tuesdays.
Three stops on the square:
- Dar el Makhzen: Roman finds from Lixus, Cotta and Volubilis, the Voyage of Venus mosaic, a life-size Carthaginian tomb, cedar ceilings, zellij and an Andalusian garden.
- Kasbah Contemporary Art Space: a restored seventeenth-century prison that opened at the end of 2021, with Moroccan and North African work behind the original cell doors.
- Ibn Battouta Space: a small room in Borj Naam on the explorer born here in 1304, who covered some 120,000 km between 1325 and 1354.
Give the first two 60 to 90 minutes.
The Legation and the Literary Layer
Ten minutes downhill, past the American Steps, Rue d’Amérique holds the oldest piece of American diplomatic property abroad. Sultan Moulay Suliman gave the building to the United States in 1821, and it remains the only US National Historic Landmark outside the United States. It now runs as a museum and research library under the TALIM name.
Fees at American Legation Tangier: 50 MAD for non-residents, 20 MAD for residents. Weekday hours are the reliable ones, and weekends are shorter.
What to look for inside:
- The Paul Bowles Wing: three rooms added in 2010, holding the writer and composer’s books, scores, photographs and suitcases.
- The paintings: works by Hamri and James McBey, both of whom knew the city well enough to paint it without flattery.
- The library: around 8,000 volumes on Morocco, the Maghreb and the American relationship with the region.
- The courtyard: tiled panels, painted ceilings and a wall of old documents.
Read the Bowles rooms before you walk the medina again. Petit Socco stops being scenery after that.
Small Collections in the Medina Lanes
Two more sit inside the medina and cost close to nothing. Fondation Lorin occupies a former synagogue and asks for a donation instead of a ticket. Philippe Lorin’s collection is press photography, posters and newspapers from the International Zone years, crowded onto the walls without much order. Hours are short and split, closed at least one day, so ask at your riad before you set off.
Dar Niaba is the newest of the group. The nineteenth-century building handled Morocco’s foreign correspondence, and it reopened as a museum of diplomatic history. It stays quiet even in high season.
Neither is a blockbuster. Both explain why Tangier feels unlike Fes or Marrakech. That is the layer most visitors miss when they work down the top things to do in Tangier list and stop at the Kasbah gate.
Villa Harris: The Art Museum by the Shore
This is the one museum on the trail that needs a taxi. Villa Harris sits on the Malabata waterfront, a late nineteenth-century house built for the journalist Walter Burton Harris and reopened in March 2021 as the city’s art museum.
Twenty dirhams buys a survey of about a hundred works: Ben Ali R’bati, Hamri, Yacoubi, Majorelle, Claudio Bravo and a room of Orientalist painters. It is the only place in Tangier that shows what Moroccan modern art looked like while it was being made.
Closed Tuesdays, like the kasbah pair. Most day itineraries cut the villa because of the drive, so the rooms are often empty.
One Day, Two Choices: What to Skip and What to Book
Two famous names should come off your list. The Forbes Museum in Palais Mendoub has been closed since the early 1990s, and the palace now serves as a state guest residence, so walk past the gates instead of through them. The private Kasbah collection once advertised with Picasso and Braque is reported shut and unconfirmed either way. The honest answer to the best museums in Tangier question is four that fit together and two to stop hunting for.

- One day: the kasbah pair first thing, the Legation afterwards, Lorin on the way down. Three museums, one hill, one ticket plus 50 MAD.
- Two days: add Villa Harris by taxi and the Ibn Battouta Space, and leave the medina a slow afternoon.
- Skip on Tuesday: everything run by the national museums foundation, which covers the kasbah pair and Villa Harris.
If you would rather not manage the timing yourself, our 5 Days Tour to Chefchaouen & Imperial Cities from Tangier starts and ends in Tangier, so the museum morning can be built around its Tangier day.
Longer routes fold the same walk into the Tangier day. The 8 Days Northern Tour: Imperial Cities & Desert from Tangier leaves from this city for Chefchaouen, Volubilis and the south, so plan the museums before the Day 1 departure.
For the coast, the squares and the cafés outside the display cases, our guide to places to visit in Tangier covers the rest. We can customize a tour to match your needs - design your perfect itinerary

How much does the Kasbah Museum cost?
Expect a few dozen dirhams, paid in cash at the door, and keep the ticket: it covers both kasbah buildings. Published prices vary between sources, so carry small notes.
