Prison Break Season 5 Filming Locations in Morocco
Prison Break Season 5 filming locations in Morocco: Ouarzazate's school-prison, Rabat, Casablanca, and how to drive them on a private tour.
Michael Scofield spends the revival season locked inside Ogygia, a prison in Sana鈥檃, in a country the production could never enter. The gate that stood in for it belongs to a school in Ouarzazate that still takes students. Prison Break season 5 filming locations Morocco work like that: one walkable desert town doubling for a closed border, with two more cities sitting on the filming permit behind it.
In this guide, we will break down what each permitted city actually holds, which parts came from a Vancouver stage, and how you can visit the places still standing.
Where Was Prison Break Season 5 Filmed?
Where was Prison Break season 5 filmed? The season runs nine episodes, and the makers needed a Yemen they were allowed to shoot. Morocco supplied it. The national film commission confirmed a permit covering Casablanca, Rabat and Ouarzazate across a 12-week production window, with roughly three weeks of shooting on Moroccan soil.
Yemen was never used. The production could not work there, so Moroccan towns and desert carried Sana鈥檃 instead. Everything inside the prison walls was a different story: cell corridors, the yard and the interiors came from a stage in Vancouver, where the season also filmed.
Plan around that split. The scenes you remember from inside Ogygia are Canadian set dressing, while the gate, the streets and the desert road outside are real Moroccan ground. Prison Break Morocco comes down to those three permitted cities, and only one of them has a location fans can point to with confidence.
Prison Break Rabat: The Permit City
Prison Break Rabat is a line on the permit and little else. Rabat appears in the production paperwork, and no published frame has been matched to a street, a gate or a building in the capital.
Rabat still rewards a day. It is the calmest of the imperial cities, with a medina you can cross in an hour, the kasbah of the Udayas above the river mouth, and the Hassan Tower plateau at the other end of town.
It also pairs neatly with Casablanca, about an hour away by train, so adding it costs you a morning rather than a full day. Walk the medina with a local guide and the morning covers the whole picture.
Prison Break Casablanca: Base Camp and a Rumour
Prison Break Casablanca is a crew town. The unit worked out of the city around the Ouarzazate shoot, and no scene has been tied to a Casablanca street. When Dominic Purcell was injured by an iron bar on set, he was treated in the city, needed roughly 150 stitches, and came back to finish.
You may have read that the Twin Centre towers were dressed as an explosion. No matched frame or permit record backs that up, so the story stays a rumour.
The city still earns your first night. Art Deco facades around Boulevard Mohammed V, the Habous quarter and the Hassan II Mosque on the shore fill a walking day, and the airport and train links make Casablanca the practical start of a film-location route.
Prison Break Ouarzazate: Ogygia and Sana鈥檃鈥檚 Streets
Prison Break Ouarzazate is the part you can stand in front of. Ogygia鈥檚 exterior belongs to the Ibn Al-Haytham technical high school on the edge of town, a real boarding school that set dressers turned into a high-security prison. It is a working campus, renovated since, and it runs no tours. You see the fa莽ade from the street and drive on.
At street level the town did the rest of Sana鈥檃. Film-location hunters have located three spots, none of them official, so treat the list as a good lead rather than a signed trail.
- H么tel Hicham on Rue Al-Mouahidine: the hotel front and the souk beside it are reported as the hotel chase; the street is busy and easy to walk.
- A茂t Boudlal lanes off Rue A茂t Kdif: narrow earth alleys reported as the workshop ambush, minutes from the centre.
- Rear of the Palais des Congr猫s: a plain municipal wall reported as a hospital entrance, passed on the way into town.
Then there is the desert. The escape spreads across the stony plateau and dam country outside Ouarzazate, where you need no doorway hunting. Any road heading south hands you the same empty horizon with the Atlas at your back.

Driving Prison Break Morocco: Route, Timing and the Atlas Pass
The three cities sit on one line south, and the timings are easy to plan around.

- Rabat to Casablanca: about an hour by train, city centre to city centre, with departures through the day.
- Casablanca to Marrakech: three hours by road or rail, and the last stretch brings the Atlas into view.
- Marrakech to Ouarzazate: three and a half to four hours over the Tizi n鈥橳ichka pass, with a stop for tea and photographs.
- Nights on the ground: two or three minimum, with Ouarzazate as the base for the school and the desert.
A private driver takes the pass out of your hands, which matters on a road that climbs to 2,260 metres and carries trucks. For the backlot side of Ouarzazate鈥檚 film history, our Atlas Studios guide covers the sets themselves.
For the imperial-city half of the trail, the 8-day imperial cities and desert tour from Casablanca links Rabat, Casablanca and the south in one private loop. If you would rather start in the desert, the 4-day desert tour from Ouarzazate puts the school, the kasbahs and the dunes in a single run.

Frequently Asked Questions
Was Prison Break Season 5 filmed in Yemen?
No. The production never worked in Yemen, so Moroccan towns and desert carried the Sana'a scenes instead. The national film commission confirmed a permit covering Casablanca, Rabat and Ouarzazate, and prison interiors were built on a stage in Vancouver.
Where was Ogygia prison filmed?
The exterior of Ogygia is the Ibn Al-Haytham technical high school on the edge of Ouarzazate, a real boarding school that set dressers turned into a high-security prison. Cell corridors and interiors were shot on a Vancouver stage, not in Morocco.
Can you visit the Ogygia prison location?
Not inside. The building is a working school with students on campus, it runs no tours, and it has been renovated since filming. You can see the fa莽ade from the street in Ouarzazate, then drive the town streets and the desert plateau used for the escape.
Was it filmed in Rabat and Casablanca?
Both cities appear on the filming permit, but neither has a scene matched to a street or building fans can point to. Casablanca served as the production base and treated the injured actor; Rabat is worth a day on its own, not as a location hunt.
