Homeland Season 8 Filming Locations: Morocco's Kabul

Homeland season 8 filming locations Morocco: Casablanca played Kabul on the street and on a soundstage. What you can still drive.

Homeland season 8 filming locations Morocco: Casablanca played Kabul on the street and on a soundstage. What you can still drive.

The final Kabul of Homeland was built in Casablanca, half on the street and half on a soundstage. The season ran twelve episodes, filmed in Morocco as Afghanistan and aired almost a year after the cameras started. Homeland Season 8 filming locations Morocco comes down to two cities and one mountain range. Casablanca played Kabul and held the stages. Marrakech and Rabat sit in the cast record, and the Atlas Mountains supplied the combat footage.

In this guide, we will break down how a Moroccan port city played Kabul twice over. We will also look at why Morocco beat Malta and Jordan, and what you can still drive to today.

Casablanca Played Kabul - and Built It on a Soundstage

The season needed Kabul, plus Moscow, Germany, Doha and the West Wing. Scouting settled that. In the production designer’s account, Homeland season 8 Casablanca became the show’s base. It played Kabul, with stage sets attached and the Atlas Mountains covering the combat outpost.

Most of that happened indoors. Set dressers shipped anything removable from the standing West Wing set in Virginia. The Oval Office went up from scratch in Casablanca, with moulds hand-sculpted by a local staff shop. A CIA Kabul station set was built on a Casablanca stage. Veterans from Cape Town, Berlin, New York and Los Angeles joined a Moroccan crew counted in the hundreds.

Street level stays blank. No Casablanca lane, boulevard or building has been published as a Kabul set, so city-level is the honest ceiling. Walk the old medina and the Art Deco centre and the choice of this city makes sense. The spy-series angle in a different city sits in our Jack Ryan filming locations Morocco guide, which follows a Marrakech radius.

Marrakech, the Atlas Mountains and a Combat Outpost

Marrakech and Rabat enter through the cast, not through a set list. A cast member said in an interview around the finale that the crew worked in Casablanca, Marrakech and Rabat. Moroccan press had reported the move south before that.

High Atlas slopes rising above Marrakech

Homeland season 8 Marrakech rests on that single quote, thin but real. Rabat had already hosted the series in season 6, dressed as Abu Dhabi and Israel. Treat Rabat as the thinnest claim of the three.

The mountains are better documented. Word reached the production designer that the season wanted a US Army combat outpost in the Korengal Valley. He figured the Atlas could supply it, then learned the sequences involved Black Hawk helicopters. Two were flown and crashed, which set off a worldwide search for pilots and airframes. Which valley or pass hosted the outpost has never been published, so range-level accuracy is where the record stops.

Malta and Jordan Were Scouted. Morocco Won.

The shortlist is the least reported part of Homeland Morocco filming locations. Scouts looked at Malta and Jordan, with Europe, Dubai and Virginia kept open. Morocco took the season. The list fits what the season needed. It asked for streets that could read as Kabul, stages big enough for a West Wing, and mountains within a day of both.

What the production designer stresses is capacity. Homeland wanted large and complex interiors built in the same city as the street work. That is the opposite of the usual arrangement, where a foreign crew flies in for exteriors and drives down to the desert country. Season 8 built the West Wing in a port city instead.

So Ouarzazate stays out of this one. Nothing confirmed ties the season to the desert or its studios, and the few reports that add it look borrowed from season 6. The series had handled Afghanistan before without the desert, shooting season 4’s Kabul in Cape Town.

The Cost of Faking a War: Weapons, Language, Paperwork

In Morocco the paperwork was real work. Showrunner Alex Gansa says every weapon, fake or not, had to be registered, rounds included. His version of that problem: imagine staging large military set pieces and having to account for every bullet.

Casting added a second constraint. Actors who could speak Pashto or Dari were scarce, so the Afghan voices on screen took extra searching. Gansa credits the Moroccan security services, which in his words kept the crew completely safe.

The schedule slipped as well. Shooting took far longer than planned, so the production finished in the United States and came out over budget and over schedule. What drove the cost:

  • Weapons: every prop firearm and every round logged with the authorities before a take.
  • Language: Pashto and Dari speakers were hard to find, which stretched the casting search.
  • Schedule: the shoot ran long, so the season wrapped on stages in the US.

Where to Stand in Casablanca and the Atlas Today

Nothing was left behind. The sets came down, no plaque marks a lane, and the streets that played Kabul are ordinary streets.

Driving the doubling yourself is easy enough:

  • Casablanca medina: narrow lanes and market frontage that make the city’s double life believable.
  • The Art Deco centre: 1930s facades a short walk from the medina, best covered on foot.
  • Tizi n’Tichka: the High Atlas crossing on the Marrakech road, as close as you get to outpost country.
  • Marrakech: the southern base, about 2h30 from Casablanca by road, with the medina as the anchor.

Rabat’s Hassan Tower quarter is an hour up the coast and worth a stop if you are tracing season 6 as well. In Casablanca, the Hassan II Mosque esplanade on the ocean fills the other half of a day. Treat the Homeland season 8 filming locations Morocco map as a drive from Casablanca to the High Atlas. There is no set trail left to follow.

Our 8-day tour from Casablanca to the imperial cities starts in the city that played Kabul and continues through Rabat. For the mountains, the 10 Days in Morocco: The Ultimate Private Tour from Marrakech to the Sahara crosses the High Atlas. It follows the same road the crew used.

Frequently Asked Questions

Was Homeland season 8 really filmed in Morocco?

Yes. Morocco stood in for Afghanistan, with Casablanca as the production base playing Kabul. Some material was finished back in the United States, so not every frame is Moroccan.

Where in Morocco was Homeland season 8 filmed?

Casablanca as the base, with the Kabul streets and the stage sets; Marrakech and Rabat according to cast interviews; and the Atlas Mountains for the combat outpost. No confirmed record ties the season to Ouarzazate or Atlas Studios.

Did Homeland actually film in Kabul or Afghanistan?

No. Season 4's Kabul was shot in Cape Town, and season 8 rebuilt Kabul's streets and interiors in Casablanca. Nothing was filmed in Afghanistan.

Can you visit the Homeland season 8 filming locations?

The streets and mountains are public, but no sets or markers survive and no street-level locations were published. Treat it as a Casablanca-to-Atlas drive rather than a set trail.
