Hassi Labied is the small Amazigh village that many travellers drive straight past on the way to the Merzouga dunes — and for plenty of them it is the better place to sleep. It sits about 4–5 km north of Merzouga, on the western edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes in the Drâa-Tafilalet region. The sand begins where the palm gardens end, so you reach the dunes on foot.

This guide covers where the village sits, why it beats Merzouga for a quiet stay, things to do in Hassi Labied, and how to get there.

What Is Hassi Labied? The Village Beside Merzouga and Erg Chebbi

Hassi Labied — also written Hassilabied — is a small settlement in Errachidia Province, at about 710 m on the western lee of the Erg Chebbi dune field. It lies roughly 4–5 km north of Merzouga and close to the Algerian border.

The name points to water: “hassi” is the local word for a well, and the village grew around the source that made settlement possible. Today it is a settled Ait Khabbash community, part of the Ait Atta Amazigh confederation, whose families settled gradually as droughts and border restrictions ended their nomadic life.

What defines the village today:

  • The oasis: Palm gardens fed by underground khettara channels sit between the houses and the sand.
  • The dune edge: The Erg Chebbi sand starts at the village’s doorstep.
  • The community: Family guesthouses, small camps and camel treks are now the main livelihood.
  • The lake: The seasonal Dayet Srji lake near the village fills after winter rains and is dry most of the year.

Why Stay in Hassi Labied Instead of Merzouga

Merzouga is the commercial hub, with a paved main street, cafés and the widest hotel choice. Stay in Hassi Labied Merzouga and you get the same essentials — dunes, camel treks, camps and sunsets — with a fraction of the traffic. That suits travellers who want to hear the desert, not the engines.

The village is low-rise: mud-and-straw houses, guesthouses with courtyards, and small camps rather than resorts. Light spill is minimal, so night skies stay dark and sunrise walks begin at your door.

Why base here:

  • Walk to the dunes: No transfer needed — the sand begins beyond the palm gardens.
  • Family-run stays: Courtyard guesthouses with home cooking, so choosing where to stay near Erg Chebbi rarely feels this personal.
  • Quieter nights: Fewer lights and less traffic mean better stargazing.
  • Short hops: Khamlia sits about 7 km away and Rissani around 40 km.

Things to Do in Hassi Labied — Camel Treks, Khamlia Gnawa and the Oasis

For a village this small, things to do in Hassi Labied all begin within a short walk. Camel treks and sunset rides set off from the village edge, quads run straight from the houses, and the khettara-fed palm gardens are a green strip for a cool morning stroll.

About 7 km away, Khamlia’s Gnawa music houses keep a tradition of spiritual music alive, and guests are often welcomed with tea and a short performance. In the village, families can arrange 4x4 circuits into the surrounding desert and the Ziz Valley.

Things to do:

  • Sunset camel trek: Rides leave from the village edge and finish out on the dunes.
  • Khamlia Gnawa: Traditional music evenings roughly 7 km from the village.
  • Oasis walk: Shaded palm gardens and irrigation channels between the houses and the sand.
  • Four-wheel circuits: Quads or 4x4 towards nomadic families, fossil fields and the Ziz Valley.

Best Time to Visit Hassi Labied and How to Get There

The best months for a Hassi Labied stay are October–November and March–April. Days sit around 20–28 °C and nights drop to 8–15 °C, with soft light for photography. Spring draws more travellers while autumn stays quieter. Winter nights can approach freezing, and summer afternoons are punishing.

Visit respectfully: the oasis plots are working farmland, so stay on the paths, ask before photographing people, and buy tea and meals locally so income stays with families.

Arriving is easiest with a pre-arranged private transfer. The closest airport is Errachidia’s Moulay Ali Cherif (ERH), roughly 120–135 km and 2–2.5 hours via Erfoud and Rissani. Marrakech is about 560 km and 9–10 hours, Fes about 470 km and 7–8 hours. The last stretch is a signed turn off the Rissani–Merzouga road, partly on dirt track.

Plan Your Private Hassi Labied Desert Stay

A private transfer takes the guesswork out of the last hour. Your driver-guide handles the Rissani–Merzouga turning, the camp check-in and the sunset timing, so you arrive with time to walk onto the sand before dinner. We can place you in a family guesthouse in the village or a small camp at the dune edge.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Hassi Labied?

Is Hassi Labied the same as Merzouga?

No. They are two separate villages about 4–5 km apart. Merzouga is the larger commercial hub with the main street and most hotels; Hassi Labied is a quieter village of family guesthouses whose palm gardens open onto the Erg Chebbi sand.

Is Hassi Labied or Merzouga better for a desert stay?

It depends on what you want. Choose Hassi Labied for calm, dark night skies, family-run guesthouses and dunes you can reach on foot. Choose Merzouga if you prefer more cafés, shops and hotel choice within walking distance.

How do you get to Hassi Labied, and what is the closest airport?

The closest airport is Errachidia's Moulay Ali Cherif (ERH), about 120–135 km and 2–2.5 hours via Erfoud and Rissani. Marrakech is roughly 560 km and Fes about 470 km. A private transfer is smoothest, since the last stretch is partly dirt track.
