Erg Chebbi explained: how big Morocco's Sahara dune sea really is, the villages around it, Chebbi vs Chegaga and how to visit privately.

Erg Chebbi is a sea of wind-blown sand on the far western edge of the Sahara, rising beside the village of Merzouga in south-eastern Morocco. An erg is a large field of dunes, and this is one of the country’s most photographed, with honey-orange crests that shift colour from dawn to dusk. The dune field itself is the landmark here — not a town, not a camp — and it begins roughly 10 km from Merzouga, close to the Algerian border.

In this guide, we will break down what Erg Chebbi really is, how big its dunes get, the villages that ring it, how it compares with Erg Chegaga, and how to experience it privately.

What Is Erg Chebbi? A Desert Dune Sea Explained

In desert geography, an erg is a broad field of wind-blown sand, and the Erg Chebbi dunes are Morocco’s headline example. Wind has stacked iron-oxide-tinted grains into sweeping dunes that rise out of a flat, rocky hamada, the stony desert surrounding the sand. From any high crest, the sand runs to the horizon in every direction, like an ocean frozen mid-swell.

The dunes are mostly barchan and transverse forms, built slowly by the prevailing wind and reshaped each season. Their colour changes through the day: pale gold at dawn, deep orange at sunset, near-silver under moonlight. Walking is easiest barefoot in the cool hours and hardest at midday in summer.

Why this desert stop feels different:

  • It is walkable: the nearest big crest is roughly 30-40 minutes on foot from the camps.
  • It is full of small detail: fennec tracks, scarab beetles and camel lines cross the sand every morning.
  • It is genuinely vast: climb one dune and there is no road, no building, no horizon line but sand.

How Big Is Erg Chebbi? Scale, Dune Heights and the Desert Around Merzouga

In figures, the Erg Chebbi Merzouga dune field runs roughly 22-28 km from north to south and about 5-7 km across, with crests rising around 150 m above the surrounding hamada. Sources disagree slightly, and a few push the maximum height toward 160 m, so treat these as rounded approximations. The dune field sits at roughly 730 m of elevation.

What surrounds the sand is stony desert rather than more sand. West of the dunes lies Dayet Srji, a shallow seasonal lake that is usually dry and, after good rains, draws flamingos and migratory birds. Toward Rissani and Erfoud, the hamada is rich in trilobite and orthoceras fossils. Distances frame the scale too: Erfoud is about 60 km away, Rissani roughly 40 km, and the drive from Marrakech covers some 560 km, normally split over two days.

The Villages Around Erg Chebbi — Merzouga, Hassilabied, Khamlia and Tissardmine

Four settlements frame the dune sea, each with a different character. Merzouga is the main hub on the erg’s western lee, with paved access, hotels, cafés and the usual departure point for camel treks and 4x4 transfers. The dunes start about 10 minutes’ drive north-east of the village centre.

The villages, quickly:

  • Merzouga: the tourism base at the sand’s edge, busiest at sunset and easiest to reach.
  • Hassilabied: a smaller, quieter base a few kilometres north, favoured for low-key stays.
  • Khamlia: about 7 km south-east, the Gnawa music village of a community of sub-Saharan descent, with guembri and drum sessions in small music houses.
  • Tissardmine: further north on the erg’s fringe, known for a small cultural café and artist residencies.

Ask before photographing people, dress modestly, and join music or tea visits as a guest rather than a spectator. Paying local families and music houses directly keeps the desert economy in local hands.

Erg Chebbi vs Erg Chegaga — Which Desert Dune Sea to Choose

Both are real Sahara, but Erg Chebbi vs Erg Chegaga is a question about the traveller, not the sand. The two dune seas trade height and easy access against emptiness and distance, and the right answer depends on how you travel.

  • First-timers and families: choose Chebbi, with higher golden dunes, drive-up access and a short camel trek to camp.
  • Photographers: choose Chebbi for the grand crest, the sunrise light and short walks to the best viewpoints.
  • Repeat Sahara travellers: choose Chegaga for isolation, reached by roughly 60 km of open piste near M’Hamid.

Chegaga’s own logistics deserve a separate guide; here the question is simply which dune sea suits you. The short rule: tallest-and-easiest points to Chebbi, wildest-and-remotest points to Chegaga.

How to Experience Erg Chebbi Privately — Desert Camps, Camel Treks and Season

A private route starts with a 4x4 transfer to the dune edge, then a camel trek paced to the erg, not a fixed schedule. You ride out for sunset on a crest, settle into a hand-picked camp for tagine, drums and stargazing, and wake to sunrise on the sand.

Season matters as much as the route. October to April is the comfortable window; October-November and March-April are the sweet spots, with warm days around 20-30°C and cool nights. May is windiest, July afternoons are fierce, and January nights drop near freezing, so pack layers.

Private pacing is what makes the difference: a family can linger, a photographer can wait for the light, and a first-timer can skip anything rushed. Our local team — Hassan on culture, Hamid on adventure, Andrea on coordination — plans each night around camp availability and season.

Two of our most popular ways to reach the sand are the 3-Day Trip from Marrakech to Merzouga and the 3-Day Desert Tour from Fes to Merzouga, both crossing the Atlas to sleep at the dunes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Erg Chebbi?

Erg Chebbi is a large field of wind-blown sand on the western edge of the Sahara in Morocco, rising beside the village of Merzouga. An erg is a sea of sand, and this one stretches roughly 22-28 km north to south, with dunes up to about 150 m high.

How big is Erg Chebbi and how tall are its dunes?

Erg Chebbi runs roughly 22-28 km from north to south and about 5-7 km across, at around 730 m of elevation. Its tallest crests rise about 150 m above the surrounding rocky hamada, though a few sources give figures closer to 160 m.

Is Erg Chebbi the same as Merzouga?

No. Erg Chebbi is the dune field itself, while Merzouga is the village beside it. The dunes begin about 5-10 km north-east of Merzouga, roughly 10 minutes by 4x4, and Hassilabied is another gateway village just to the north.

Is Erg Chebbi or Erg Chegaga better for a first Sahara trip?

For a first Sahara trip, Erg Chebbi is usually the better choice: the dunes are higher, access is easier and there are many camps. Erg Chegaga suits repeat Sahara travellers who want isolation, reached by roughly 60 km of open piste near M'Hamid.
