Aquaman Filming Locations Morocco: Merzouga & Erfoud Guide
Aquaman filming locations Morocco: Merzouga's Erg Chebbi dunes and Erfoud, where the 2018 film shot its Sahara in October 2017.
Arthur and Mera jump out of a plane into empty desert early in Aquaman, and the sand they fall toward is real Moroccan ground. James Wan’s 2018 film shot its Sahara material around Merzouga and Erfoud, in the Tafilalt, in October 2017 as principal photography closed. The aquaman filming locations morocco list is short, two towns at the western edge of the Sahara, and both are open to visitors.
Most of the film was made on sound stages in Queensland, so the Moroccan unit was a small crew in a large landscape. This guide covers where was aquaman filmed in the desert, what Erg Chebbi is like on foot, and how to reach the dunes on a private tour.
What Aquaman Shot in Morocco
The Moroccan unit filmed one sequence: Arthur and Mera bail out of a plane over the Sahara and fall through a sinkhole into the buried Kingdom of the Deserters. The sand in that stretch came from the erg outside Merzouga. The kingdom underneath was built later, in post-production.
Coverage of the film’s visual effects places Morocco alongside the plate and second-unit work done in Newfoundland and Sicily. The Gold Coast studios carried the rest of the film. Newfoundland covered the ocean plates, and Sicily’s village was rebuilt on a stage after Erice refused permission to film there. No call sheet naming a specific dune has been published, so the safe way to read the location list is at town and erg level.
You can still visit all three:
- Merzouga: the village at the foot of Erg Chebbi, the sand sea that played the Sahara.
- Erfoud: the fossil town about an hour north, named on the production’s location list.
- Erg Chebbi: the dune field itself, 22 to 28 km long and 5 to 7 km wide.
Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi Dunes
Erg Chebbi begins without warning. East of Merzouga the ground is flat, stony hamada for kilometres. Then the sand lifts into a wall of dunes that runs north to south for 22 to 28 km and measures 5 to 7 km across. The crests reach about 150 m above the plain.

That abrupt edge is why the erg works on camera. A crew can look west into bare stone or east into sand within a short drive. The aquaman merzouga material uses the same view every visitor gets at sunrise, when the crests turn orange while the troughs stay blue-grey.
- The edge: sand starts abruptly, with no gradual transition from gravel to dune.
- The light: colour changes fastest in the first hour after sunrise and the last hour before sunset.
- The scale: the highest crests sit roughly 150 m above the hamada, a stiff climb on foot.
Erfoud: The Fossil Town Behind the Shoot
Erfoud lies 50 to 60 km north of the dunes, about an hour by road. It has been the Tafilalt’s fossil town since long before anyone filmed there. The limestone around it is Devonian seabed, laid down 350 to 400 million years ago, and it is full of orthoceras, ammonites and trilobites.
The erfoud morocco film connection is thinner than the fossil trade. The town appears on the production’s location list, and no published account describes scenes shot in its streets. Its role is geographic. Every road from Fes, Errachidia or Rissani to the dunes runs through or past it. Desert crews in this region have always worked from towns like it.
The workshops are free to enter and most are working ateliers rather than showrooms. You will see stone being cut and polished, and you will be offered a trilobite. Buy one or not; the visit itself costs nothing.
How to Visit the Merzouga Dunes Today
Merzouga is far from everywhere, and the drive is part of the trip. Fes is 460 to 470 km away, seven to eight hours by road through Errachidia. Marrakech is about 560 km, nine to ten hours, which most travellers split over two days with a night near the Dades or Todra gorges.

From the village, three options get you onto the sand:
- Camel: roughly 90 minutes to the camps, slow, and the classic approach.
- On foot: easy on the first ridges at the village edge, hard work beyond them.
- 4x4: the usual luggage transfer, and the better choice if riding is not for you.
October to April is the comfortable window, since summer afternoons push past 40°C. Pack a small bag for the camp and leave the rest in the vehicle, because the last stretch is sand track. If you want the other desert film credit shot in the same erg, our guide to Matchbox’s Morocco filming locations covers Merzouga and Erfoud from a different production.
Plan Your Desert Crossing
A desert crossing goes better when the driving is planned around light instead of distance. Aim to reach the erg in the late afternoon, sleep in a camp below the big dunes, and climb a ridge for sunrise. Two or three nights between Fes and Merzouga keep that pace comfortable rather than rushed. On the way out, the road north passes Erfoud’s fossil workshops, an easy stop before the long drive.

Two itineraries already run this ground. The 3-Day Desert Tour from Fes to Merzouga crosses the Middle Atlas via Ifrane and Midelt, with a camel trek and a night in camp. The 4-Day Desert Tour from Fes to Marrakech adds the Todra and Dades gorges on the road south.
